MORONGO BASIN MAC TO NAME JOSHUA TREE A “DARK SKY PARK”

The Morongo Basin Municipal Advisory Council, the MAC, who advises the county on local concerns, will meet tonight. Reporter David Haldane says the meeting is mostly about dark skies…
If you’re the kind of person who loves looking up at a beautiful night sky, you just may be in luck. The Morongo Basin Municipal Advisory Council meets tonight, with only one item on its agenda: A resolution supporting the designation of Joshua Tree National Park as a “dark sky park” by the International Dark Sky Association.
It’s all part of the ongoing observance of the National Park Service’s 100th anniversary during which, among other things, Joshua Tree will host a Night Sky Festival, bringing together astronomers, scientists, stargazers, and nearby residents to celebrate the park’s widely hailed star-spattered skies.
The festival happens October 28-30. Tonight’s MAC meeting gets underway 6:30 p.m. at the Joshua Tree Community Center on Sunburst Avenue.
