MORONGO BASIN MAC MEETS TONIGHT, PROTECTED LANDS AND TOURISM ON AGENDA

The Morongo Basin MAC has a busy agenda tonight, ranging from tourism to protected lands. Reporter David Haldane explains…

If you’re alarmed by government threats to reduce the boundaries of federally protected lands, tonight’s your chance to be heard. That’s when the Morongo Basin Municipal Advisory Council considers a resolution supporting the existing boundaries of two such Southern California areas: The Sand to Snow and Mojave Trails National Monuments.

Sand to Snow comprises 154,000 acres including some of the San Gorgonio Wilderness, while Mojave Trails covers 941,000 acres including a long stretch of historic Route 66.

Both are set to be reviewed by the Interior Department following an executive order by President Trump earlier this year.
In other business, the Council will hear a county update by Supervisor James Ramos and a report on tourism for fiscal 2016/17.
Tonight’s meeting gets underway 6:30 p.m. at the Joshua Tree Community Center on Sunburst Avenue.
