MORONGO BASIN MAC MEETS TONIGHT, MAY WEIGH IN ON A BAKER SOLAR FIELD

The Morongo Basin Municipal Advisory Council, appointed to advise the County Supervisor about local matters, are expected to stick their noses into matters in the community of Baker tonight. Reporter David Haldane looks at the MAC’s agenda…
The Morongo Basin Municipal Advisory Council tonight will consider endorsing a move to halt a proposed solar power plant near Baker, California.
The Soda Mountain Solar Project—planned along the I-15 corridor—could potentially power more than 170,000 homes statewide. According to a letter by the Morongo Basin Conservation Association, however, it would also have “significant and unavoidable impacts that would compromise the quality of the environment and have substantial adverse impacts on human beings.”
The letter—addressed to San Bernardino County Supervisor James Ramos—urges supervisors to deny their approval to the project’s final environmental impact report and ground water well permits.
The board meets July 12 to consider both.
Tonight’s MAC meeting gets underway 6:30 p.m. at the Joshua Tree Community Center on Sunburst Avenue.
