The Morongo Basin MAC will take up two controversial development proposals at a meeting in Joshua tree tonight. Reporter David Haldane has the details…
The Morongo Basin Municipal Advisory Council meets tonight to consider two hot button issues. First, it will discuss whether to adopt a resolution opposing a plan by Florida-based NextEra Energy Resources to build a 100-acre solar power farm at the site of the now defunct Joshua Tree Airport. If constructed as proposed, the plant—on Sunfair Road north of Highway 62—would generate 20 megawatts of electricity for sale to Southern California Edison.
Next the council will tackle the question of whether to oppose the Alta Mira housing project, a 248-unit residential development planned on 105 acres adjacent to the north and west sides of Joshua Tree’s Friendly Hills Elementary School.
Both projects have been in the works for years, generating a great deal of local opposition.
Tonight’s meeting gets underway 6:30 p.m. at the Joshua Tree Community Center on Sunburst Avenue.
