MORONGO BASIN MAC GETS I-10 UPDATE, STATE ENDS LOCAL HOMELESS PROGRAM

Last night, the Morongo Basin Municipal Advisory Council gathered for their monthly meeting and heard crucial details of the I-10 upgrade project direct from a CalTrans representative. Reporter Heather Clisby was there…

The Morongo Basin Municipal Advisory Council kicked off their monthly meeting last night with County Fire Battalion Chief Scott Tuttle reporting an unusually busy time – everything from a Park air rescue to major structure fires to another rescue of a mine shaft explorer who had repelled down but could not get out.

Wayne Hamilton from the Morongo Basin Haven announced that the 13-year-old group would be essentially phased out now that Governor Gavin Newsom has provided direct funding to address homelessness in the state. In its place, the East Valley Regional Steering Committee has been formed to determine how to direct the $310K. Made up of former Haven members, the new Committee will have its first regional meeting – a “more formal” proceeding – on March 19 at the JT Sportsman’s Club, 6225 Sunburst Street, at 10 am.

Representing CalTrans District 8, Shane Massoud gave a presentation regarding the $210M I-10 Tune-Up Pavement Rehabilitation Project. Massoud explained that the project, spanning from Beaumont to Whitewater, will be done in three phases and is scheduled for completion in Winter 2022. The goal is to replace damaged concrete slabs on lanes #1 and #2, rehabilitate concrete on lanes #3 and #4, upgrade on/off-ramps and build a crossover lane. During the project, traffic will be slowed from 70 mph to 60 mph. For more details and to receive text notifications on the project, visit i10TuneUp.com or call 833-410-8863.
