A recent public survey conducted by Morongo Basin Humane Society revealed overwhelming support for building another no-kill animal shelter to replace the aging facility in Joshua Tree. Reporter Heather Clisby has details…
For four decades, the Joshua Tree No-Kill Animal Shelter has provided care for our region’s homeless dogs and cats. Unfortunately, the mission has outgrown its’ facility and the small building is no longer safe or efficient.
So, the Morongo Basin Humane Society (MBHS) turned to the community for guidance through a direct survey. Among the respondents (898), more than 95 percent voted to build a new expanded facility for continuation of services. Significantly fewer respondents, less than five percent, voted to change MBHS mission from adoption center to community assistance. A small percentage, less than one percent, voted to disband the non-profit.
Now the MBHS board must determine if building a new shelter is economically reasonable. A feasibility report must show that the MBHS and their volunteers can organize and fundraise toward that end goal.
The MBHS board pledges to keep the community informed on future plans. You can follow the organization on Facebook and Instagram, or visit their site at mbhumanesociety.com.
