MORONGO BASIN CULTURAL ARTS COUNCIL CELEBRATES 20 YEARS AS GALLERY 62 CLOSES

As the Morongo Basin Cultural Arts Council celebrates their twentieth anniversary, they announced the closure of one of the organization’s downtown Joshua Tree galleries. For more on this story, we go to reporter Jef Harmatz…

The kickoff to the Arts Council’s 2021-2022 season is not only a celebration of two decades of art programs, but a testament to the organization’s resilience. The challenges of Covid-19, rising rents, and a lack of grant funding led the Arts Council to shutter one of their two venues, Gallery 62, in November when it will merge with the nearby Joshua Tree Art Gallery. This shakeup comes as the non-profit Arts Council honors its twenty year history with an anniversary exhibition called “Our Founders & Directors.” The show will feature work from important figures from the group’s past alongside new artists who represent the future of the Arts Council. The show can be viewed on Saturdays between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and Sundays between noon and 3 p.m. at 61607 29 Palms Hwy., Suite B. A reception for the exhibition will be held at the gallery from 6 to 8 p.m. on September 11.
