On Tuesday, a Yucca Mesa girl was granted the best Christmas ever by the only law-enforcement-based charity in Southern California. The Debbie Chisholm Memorial Foundation grants the wishes of seriously ill children in the Inland empire from Temecula to Twentynine Palms, Riverside to the Coachella Valley. Wishes granted in the past have included a collection of Barbie dolls, a big-screen television, or a trip to Europe; no wish is too big or too small. The charity also provides a program during the Christmas holidays called The Spirit of Christmas. The charity asks the Children’s Oncology Unit at Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital to select several families who are unable to afford a Christmas for themselves due to the exorbitant medical costs related to their child’s illness. The Debbie Chisholm Memorial Foundation provides each family with a Christmas tree, several gifts for each family member, and food gift cards for their holiday meal. All of this is delivered to the child’s home by Santa Claus riding in a fire engine, led by a police escort. The charity has recently expanded to help children who are victims of violent crime. In the Give Children Back Their Childhood program, children and their family or caretakers are given a two-day all-expense paid trip to Disneyland, Sea World, Universal Studios, or Knott’s Berry Farm. The Debbie Chisholm Memorial Foundation receives its funds for its programs through donations, fund-raising events throughout the year.
