MORE INFORMATION ON INJURED HORSEBACK RIDER RESCUED FROM BLACK ROCK CANYON

We have more information on a horseback rider who was air rescued from Black Rock Canyon on Sunday. According to another Sheriff’s press release, Sunday (January 23), just before 2 p.m., deputies responded to assist fire department personnel with an injured rider, identified as 56-year-old Roberta Totten of Riverside County. Totten reportedly was injured when she fell off the horse and suffered severe lower back trauma. The horse ran off, leaving the injured rider. Fire personnel located the rider and requested the San Bernardino County Helicopter (Air Rescue 306). Air Rescue arrived and conducted an extensive search for Totten and located her with the help of fire personnel. The crew of Air Rescue 306 determined a hoist rescue was needed due to the steep rocky terrain and to get Totten expedited medical treatment.

Pilot Deputy Doug Brimmer positioned the helicopter above Totten. Crew Chief Deputy Tommy Dickey used the hoist to lower Air Medic Stacey Price and Reserve Deputy Steve Miller down to Totten. The Air Medics assessed Totten for injuries, secured her in a Stokes Basket, and had her hoisted back up to the helicopter. Due to the severity of Totten’s injuries, she was transported by Air Rescue 306 to Desert Regional Medical Center for treatment.

As reported earlier, the horse was located a short time later by nearby residents.
