Some Mojave Desert Land Trust properties are within Dome fire burn zone. A total of 289 acres within the burn perimeter are owned and managed by the Mojave Desert Land Trust. Another 230 acres are on the boundary of the fire. The lands include terrain on the southeastern shoulder of Cima Dome. The area is important desert tortoise habitat. Since 2006, the Mojave Desert Land Trust has acquired 25,775 acres within Mojave National Preserve and conveyed 16,906 acres over to the Preserve. It manages 8,869 acres within the Preserve. Peter Satin, Director of Land Management for the land trust said, “The Mojave National Preserve is one of the jewels of the Mojave Desert. We are heartbroken by the fire in the Cima Dome area of Mojave National Preserve and the loss of significant habitat for Joshua trees, desert tortoise, and a host of other flora and fauna. We are closely monitoring the situation.”
