The novel takes place in the summer of ’64 in the town of Smoke Tree where Capt. Carlos Caballo, who leads the local Sheriff’s substation, is wrangling a multitude of thorny problems. First, there’s a joint Army-Air Force exercise that has dropped 100,000 soldiers nearby, a risqué carnival, a revival preacher, a railroad thievery plot and, of course, the Mafia.

The free reading will take place at the Black Rock Nature Center at 9800 Black Rock Canyon Road in Yucca Valley. For more info, call the Desert Institute at 760- 367-5539.
