MISUNDERSTANDING LEADS TO ASSAULT WITH KNIFE AT WAL-MART

Ronald Espinoza thought he was just being neighborly when he offered his used newspaper to the man sitting with him in the automotive section at Wal-Mart about 11:30 Friday morning. But Jose Reyes, 34, of Yucca Valley, mistook the 65-year-old Yucca Valley man’s friendly offer for a sexual advance, and complained to the management, demanding that his auto service be done at no charge. Sheriff’s Sergeant Steve Wilson said Reyes then went back to Espinoza and took out a knife and started waving it around. Espinoza blocked the knife with his hand, suffering a small scratch, but somehow Reyes ended up cutting his own left hand. Reyes then fled into the store, but was found and taken into custody by police. Jose Reyes was arrested for investigation of assault with a deadly weapon and booked at the Morongo Basin Jail, with his bail set at $50,000.
