MISSING 17-YEAR-OLD FOUND IN JOSHUA TREE

A 17-year-old boy who was missing overnight in Joshua Tree was found Monday afternoon. Owen Coogan left a note in a home in the 61700 block of Elwood Place about 7 p.m. Sunday, saying he was going into the mountains of Joshua Tree National Park. Coogan has auditory and visual learning disabilities. Monday morning Sheriff’s deputies sent a helicopter and tracking dogs to search for him.

A bloodhound and his tracker found him about 12:20 p.m. on a steep, rocky hillside covered with large boulders. Deputies hiked to him and determined he needed medical assistance due to traumatic injuries he suffered from falling off a large boulder. He was hoisted out by a helicopter and transported to a nearby ambulance and taken to Desert Hospital in Palm Springs for treatment.
