An injured man missing for more than 24 hours was located in Morongo Valley and airlifted to medical treatment, thanks to the efforts of the high desert community. On Monday (December 26) at around 3:30 p.m. Nathan Otto, a 58 year-old resident of Palm Desert, was reported missing to the Morongo Basin Sheriff’s Station. Otto was said to have been last seen riding a dirt bike away from a residence in the 5800 block of Paradise Avenue in Morongo Valley. Ottos’ friends reported him missing after he did not return from the ride.
An coordinated effort by the Sheriff’s Department’s Aviation Division, California Highway Patrol Aviation Division, and patrol deputies searched the area into the night but did not find him. The search continued Tuesday morning (December 27,) and 40 Search and Rescue Members, including Sheriff’s Deputies, members of The Morongo Valley Fire Department and California Highway Patrol, representatives from the Bureau of Land Management, and concerned members of the community, continued looking for Otto.
It was one of those “citizen searchers” that ultimately located Otto at around 7 p.m. Otto was found suffering from life-threatening injuries from crashing the dirt bike. Due to rugged terrain and the severity of his injuries, a helicopter brought paramedics to Otto, where they began life-saving maneuvers, before airlifting him to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palms Springs for continued medical treatment.
