MISCREANTS THREATEN FUTURE OF 29 PALMS MOVIES IN THE PARK

The City of Twentynine Palms has been putting on movies in the park during the summer for years. But unruly kids are threatening the continuation of this family-friendly event. Managing editor Tami Roleff has more…

Last year, the City of Twentynine Palms had to stop a movie during the middle of the show because of kids who were fighting in the park. Last week, during the first movie of the summer, town staff had cut the movie short because of unsupervised and unruly kids. City Manager Frank Luckino talked about the movies in the park with Z107.7.

“It’s being jeopardized. There are numerous children being dropped off at our park who are not there to watch the movies. It’s become an issue with law enforcement, and because of that, it’s jeopardizing movies in the park. So we’re asking these parents, aunts, uncles, grandparents to know where your children are going.”

He added that the city doesn’t want to discontinue the movies in the park.

“The council is very supportive of wanting to continue this quality of life, but it’s a safety issue out there.”

Luckino said that normally, the city has one deputy at Luckie Park during the movie. Last week, there were four.

“Next week, we’ll have six deputies there.”

Luckino said staff will be talking with the Sheriff’s school resource officer who knows the children.

“We need to figure out a solution. There’s a safety issue out there, and we’ve got to address the safety issue. Parents may be getting a knock on the door.”
