Two Memorial Day ceremonies will be held in the Morongo Basin Monday, May 30. The Twentynine Palms cemetery, at 5350 Encelia Avenue, will hold its annual ceremony in the rose garden this year, starting at 9 a.m. Boy and Girl Scouts will be placing flags on graves Saturday morning, and both scout groups will be among the 18 organizations presenting wreaths at Monday’s ceremony. The Joshua Tree Memorial Park’s 15th annual Memorial Day observance begins at 11 a.m. with a military ceremony, followed by a free community barbecue and live music. U.S. Marine Corps Colonel Jay Wylie of the Twentynine Palms Marine Corps Air-Ground Combat Center will be the guest speaker, and the ceremony will feature memorial wreaths, release of white doves, color guard and Taps. The free barbecue, and music by the Shadow Mountain Band and the hard rock cover band Gutter Candy, starts at noon. There will also be vendors and family friendly activities. The Joshua Tree cemetery is located on the south side of Highway 62 in Joshua Tree.
