State Assemblyman Chad Mayes of Yucca Valley has introduced legislation that may take some of the bite from the controversial State Fire Prevention Fee. Reporter Mike Lipsitz explains…
California’s $150-per-dwelling Fire Prevention Fee, or SRA Fee, has been vigorously opposed by affected property owners since 2011 when it went into effect. A bill working its way through the State Assembly offers some relief to certain property owners who are subject to the SRA fee. Introduced by Chad Mayes, who represents the 42nd Assembly District including Morongo Basin, AB1202 has strong bi-partisan support. The $150 per habitable structure fee is imposed on owners of property in Cal Fire’s State Responsibility Areas and is used to pay for fire prevention services. Those areas form a patchwork that cuts across Yucca Valley, Morongo Valley, Flamingo Heights, Pioneertown and Johnson Valley. Calling it a “simple matter of fairness,” Mayes bill would allow property owners to reduce their SRA Fee by any amount paid to a local fire protection district for fire prevention services.
