MAY IS BICYCLE SAFETY MONTH

May’s beautiful weather means more people riding bicycles. It’s also bicycle safety awareness month.

Throughout the month the Town of Yucca Valley and the City of Twentynine Palms will be conducting traffic safety operations focusing on some of the most dangerous driving behaviors such as speeding, making illegal turns, failure to yield to bicycles and pedestrians, and running red lights and stop signs.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department asks drivers to be aware of their actions that could endanger bicyclists, like making a turn without looking or opening a car door near streets or bike paths and not maintaining a minimum of three feet of distance when passing a bicyclist.

Riders should use lights and reflectors at night, travel in the same direction as traffic, and yield to pedestrians. They also suggest all riders wear a helmet to reduce the chance of head injury in case of a crash.
