MARINES ANNOUNCE LARGE SCALE EXERCISES IN JOHNSON VALLEY IN AUGUST

Three years ago, the Marine Corps announced that it would be conducting large-scale military exercises on land managed by the Bureau of Land Management in Johnson Valley. The Marine Corps had originally planned to hold the training exercises from August 1 to the 31. Under the shared-use agreement, public access to the BLM land is prohibited during Marine Corps exercises. The Marine Corps recently announced it has adjusted the time it needs to conduct the exercises this year; the Johnson Valley shared-use area will be temporarily closed to the public between August 14 and 21. And under the terms of the shared use agreement, the Marine Corps must give 12 months’ advance notice of its plans to use the area, and so military officials have announced that it will use the area for the entire month of August in 2017.
