The Marine involved in a shooting on the Twentynine Palms Combat Center Tuesday morning died following a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Marine officials told Z107.7 News that the shooter—who has been identified only as a male Marine—fired several shots in different directions on the base near 4th Street and Sturgis about 6:30 a.m. The Marine then moved to a remote location tucked behind a hill with no real danger to bystanders; base officials said the Marine shot himself about 8:30 a.m. The Marine was taken to a medical facility where he later died. His identity is being withheld by the Marine Corps for 24 hours to notify next of kin.
