The Marine Corps will consider extending maternity leave to up to one full year, up from the Defense Department’s mandated 12 weeks. General David Berger, who took over as the Marine Corps’ Commandant last week, said the service’s parental and maternity leave policies are “inadequate” that have failed to keep pace with societal norms and modern talent management practices.”

Berger said Marines should never be forced to choose “between being the best parent possible and the best Marine possible.” Last year, the Marine Corps announced it was extending it paternity leave to 14 days, up from 10 days.
