On this date 244 years ago, the United States Marine Corps was born when the Continental Congress authorized the establishment of a battalion of Marines; the first Marines enlisted in Tun Tavern in Philadelphia. Every year, Marines around the world—active duty and retired, and their families—gather to honor their heritage with a celebration that includes birthday cake, toasts, a meal, and dancing. Managing editor Tami Roleff says the Marine Corps’ commandant and sergeant major released a video that ties the Corps’ historic past with its future…
In a birthday video, Commandant of the Marine Corps General David Berger talked about Marines preparing for a combat mission.
“Every Marine trains, prepares, 24-7 to get the phone call in the middle of the night that your unit’s deploying. The phone call that you weren’t expecting, but you’re ready for.” Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps Sgt. Maj. Troy E. Black focused on the camaraderie Marines develop. “Marines win as a team. It’s a team sport. We get there, fight, sustain, advance and win as a team.” The video ends with Berger and Black celebrating the Corps’ heritage. “Once a Marine always a Marine is not just a slogan. Here’s to 244 years of success as a Corps.” “Happy birthday, Marines.”
