Brock Myers, the 25-year-old Twentynine Palms Marine who shot another Marine in the face while horsing around while drunk two years ago, was convicted of murder by a jury Friday afternoon in Joshua Tree Superior Court. According to court records, the jury started deliberating 8:30 a.m. Thursday, and came back with a guilty verdict of murder about 5 p.m. Friday, along with the penalty enhancement of using a firearm to commit great bodily injury. However, the jury found that the use of the firearm to commit murder was not intentional. Myers and Steven Kohus, 26, were both corporals attached to 1st Battalion, 7th Marines. They, along with several other friends, had been drinking March 2, 2014 at a home in the 7300 block of Saladin Avenue in Twentynine Palms. Myers told deputies that shortly after 9 p.m. that night, he asked Kohus for a lighter, who refused to give it to him. Kohus then said he would give it to Myers if Myers stuck the gun in Kohus’s mouth and pulled the trigger. Myers testified in court that he didn’t think his gun was loaded. Sentencing is set for August 26. Myers could face 15 years to life for murder, with an additional 3 to 10 years for using a gun.
