MARIJUANA INITIATIVE A TOP STORY IN YUCCA VALLEY

In other top stories of 2017, the Town of Yucca Valley has an issue that has the potential to affect not just its residents, but the entire Morongo Basin as well. Managing editor Tami Roleff explains…

This summer, proponents of commercial marijuana cultivation, manufacturing, and testing circulated petitions for a citizens’ initiative in Yucca Valley that would permit these activities in town limits. The petitions had more than enough signatures to force the Yucca Valley Town Council to place the measure on the ballot in the June 5 primary election. The initiative would not allow retail pot shots or delivery of marijuana in town limits, but would allow commercial cultivation, manufacturing, and testing of marijuana products in industrial zones in Yucca Valley. If the measure passes, supporters says it will result in dozens of good-paying jobs for Morongo Basin residents and potentially millions of dollars in sales tax revenue for the town; opponents say residents have already expressed their disapproval of marijuana in Yucca Valley by voting down Measure X, which would have allowed medical marijuana to be sold in town limits.
