Spring is just around the corner, bringing time and weather changes to your desert-smart garden. With your March gardening tips, we go to Hilary Sloane…
Warm, mild weather this month prompts rapid growth of plants, as well as insect pests. You’ll want to plant perennials as early as possible this month if you missed the fall planting season. The time to transplant Yuccas is from March to mid-April. Teach your plants to grow deeply for moisture and in spring, for average soils, water deeply only every two to three weeks. Check aphids on new growth; wash off with strong jet of water but avoid chemicals. While you’re in your garden, get rid of weeds while they are small, especially before they reseed. Make sure you are watering only during the warm time of day between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.
