The man who was killed when a Jeep hit his wheelchair on Highway 62 in Yucca Valley Tuesday night has been identified by the coroner as Travis Carlson, 50, of Landers. Sheriff’s Deputy Shane Crowl said Carlson was in his wheelchair crossing the highway—not in a crosswalk—at Old Woman Springs Road about 10 p.m. when a Jeep traveling eastbound hit him. The Jeep had a green light at the intersection. Travis Carlson was taken to Hi-Desert Medical Center where he died from his injuries.
This was the at least the second time Carlson was hit by a vehicle while in his wheelchair. In November 2017, Carlson was involved in a hit-and-run in Yucca Valley. An SUV traveling southbound on Grand Avenue hit Carlson near Antelope Trail, and then fled the scene. Carlson was taken to Desert Hospital in Palm Springs where he recovered from that crash.
