A small earthquake rumbled the Morongo Basin yesterday (June 23) around 1 p.m. According to the US Geologic Society, the epicenter of the magnitude 3.6 quake was around 2.5 miles North/northwest of Yucca Valley, about half way to Pioneertown. There were no reported injuries or damage from the small quake, but it does serves as a reminder to make sure you know what to do when “The Big One” hits.
Before an earthquake happens is the optimal time to take steps to learn what you can do to lesson the chances of injury or death in the event of an earthquake. First, during the temblor; if you are indoors, duck or drop down to the floor and hold on. Stay clear of windows, or any thing that could fall causing injury. If you are in a crowded area, take cover where you are, if outside get into the open, away from buildings and power lines. While driving, stop if it is safe, stay inside your car. Stay away from bridges, overpasses and tunnels. After an earthquake check for injuries. Look for and extinguish small fires and gas leaks. If your home has experienced damage, get out. Listen to a portable, battery-operated radio for updated emergency information and instructions from Z107.7; this may be your main source of information. And lastly, expect aftershocks. Each time you feel one, drop, cover, and hold on! Be safe, and be prepared for next “big one.”
