MAC TAKES UP INCREASE IN JOSHUA TREE NATIONAL PARK SEARCH AND RESCUES TONIGHT

It seems that almost every week now we hear something about a visitor being lost in Joshua Tree National Park. Tonight, the Morongo Basin Municipal Advisory Council will hear about it too. Reporter David Haldane explains…
Just over two weeks ago, a hiker from New Zealand spent four days stranded with a shattered hip in Joshua Tree National Park. Last year, a 54-year-old attorney drank urine and ate cactus to survive for five days before being rescued. And not too long after that, a young Orange County couple disappeared in the park only to be found dead three months later.
If you have the feeling that this sort of thing is happening more often lately, you’re right; volunteer rescuers say they get as many as three calls a week these days compared to only three a month five year ago. Which is not surprising given that the park gets twice as many visitors.
The Morongo Basin Municipal Advisory Council will hear an update on all this tonight when Alice Waltermire, a K9 handler for Joshua Tree National Park Search and Rescue, talks about what’s going on.
The public meeting gets underway 5:30 p.m. at the Joshua Tree Community Center on Sunburst Avenue.
