The Geminids are widely recognized as the best annual meteor shower for stargazers. Managing editor Tami Roleff says the best nights for viewing are this weekend…
The Geminid meteor shower is expected to be a great show this year, as the shower’s peak overlaps with a nearly new moon, so there will be darker skies and no moonlight to wash out the fainter meteors. The meteors will be visible through December 17; the peak will happen on the night of Sunday, December 13 and going into the morning of December 14, with about 60 shooting stars an hour. The peak viewing time will be around 2 a.m. For best viewing, get away from bright lights, and let your eyes adjust for about 30 minutes beforehand.
