Yucca Valley High School boys’ soccer won against Twentynine Palms High School, by a score of 4 to 1. Coach Jorge Rodriguez said senior Andrew Bellucci scored a hat trick (three goals); senior Oscar Hernandez scored one goal. Senior Giovanni Costagliola had one assist, and senior Bryan Grijalva also had one assist. Defensive leaders were senior Enrique Tamayo with nine blocks and sophomore Jorge Diaz with six blocks. Senior goalkeeper Luis Estrada had 11 saves.
The Yucca Valley High School girls’ soccer team hosted Twentynine Palms High School and dominated the game finishing with a 5-0 score. Yucca Valley coach Scott Phillips said junior Alexia Missett led the way with three goals and one assist. Freshman Riley Vallo added a goal with junior Hayli Mayhood and freshman Stefani Huff adding assists. Senior Nikole Cody recorded the shutout. Twentynine Palms Coach Richard Sanchez said senior goalkeeper Maranda Palmer contributed 28 saves for the ’Cats. Senior defenders Kathy Lazaro and Erin Babinec worked hard on defense all evening against speedy forwards from the opposition.
After a tough loss Thursday to Shadow Hills in the last Dual competition, the Yucca Valley High School wrestlers ended team competition with third place in the De Anza League. Coach Larry Giron said the Yucca Valley wrestlers returned to a great weekend with not one wrestler eliminated in competition and every wrestler who competed for the team medaled.
Vanesa Contreras dominated the competition with a first place win. Jake Merritt earned first place and MVP of the upper weight division. Second place winners were Sahara Pena and Fernanda Macias. With third place wins were Katherine Kennedy, Julie Fuentes, Gabe Contreras, Trevor Scott, Andrew Reyes, Kian Koedel, Aaron Alexander and Onkar Sandhu. Rounding out the competition with medal wins were Damian Vasquez, Gary Koger, and Freeman Kennedy, wrestling back to win medals. The Yucca Valley Trojan wrestling team also won third place out of 18 schools at Carson High School.
In high school sports tomorrow, the Twentynine Palms girls’ soccer team will travel away to Big Bear; the match starts at 5 p.m.
Also tomorrow, the Joshua Springs girls’ basketball team will travel away to Redlands to play Redlands Adventist Academy. Tip-off is at 5 p.m.
