It promises to be a crowded field for the November 4th elections for Twentynine Palms City Council. Reporter Dan Stork tells what prospective candidates must do to participate in the campaign…
Twentynine Palms City Clerk Cindy Villescas described to local media the steps that she and prospective City Council candidates will have to complete for the upcoming election season. Candidates can pick up information and form packets starting at 8 am on Monday July 14. There is a required $37 filing fee. Candidates must fill out a “statement of organization” if they expect to collect campaign funds in excess of $100. On another form, they must disclose all business interests and property. An optional candidate’s statement of up to 250 words may be filed for an additional $200 fee. In addition, a “nomination form” with at least 20 valid signatures is required. The deadline for returning all forms to the City Clerk, and being sworn in as a candidate, is 6 pm on Thursday August 7. That deadline would be extended to August 14, if no incumbent has filed—but that is not going to be this case for this election. During the campaign, each candidate must periodically submit forms required by the Fair Political Practices Commission, which the City Clerk will forward to the California Secretary of State. Villescas said that at least 8 individuals are expected to file for the three open seats. Mayor Dan Mintz and Council member Jim Harris have said they will run for re-election, while Jay Corbin will not seek another term.
