LIVE MORTAR SHELL FOUND IN TWENTYNINE PALMS

Two people riding dirt bikes in Twentynine Palms found a live mortar round Sunday morning. According to a Sheriff’s report, deputies were called about 11 a.m. Sunday to an area in the desert east of Adobe Road and north of Indian Trail. The bike rider found a partially buried ammunition box and when he opened it, he found a live 81-mm mortar round. An explosive ordnance team from the Twentynine Palms Marine base were also notified and took possession of the mortar.
