LIGHTNING SPARKED FIRE BRIEFLY CONCERNS RIMROCK AND BURNS CANYON

A wildfire, possibly started by a lightning strike in the San Bernardino National Forest, put up smoke that was seen for miles but burned less than an acre on Tuesday evening, July 24. The Rainbow fire burned near Onyx Summit, near Highway 38 where the highway turns north toward Big Bear, about nine miles west-southwest of Rimrock; six miles from Burns Canyon. Firefighters received multiple reports of a fire about 5:40 p.m. At the time, a stationary storm cell hung over Onyx Summit and was producing cloud-to-ground lightning strikes. Helicopters dipped into Jenks Lake for water to pour on the flames. The storm dissipated early Tuesday evening, no structures were threatened.

The approximate location of the fire, dubbed the #RainbowFire, was located on Highway 38 at the location marked on this Google map.
