“LET THEM PLAY” DEMONSTRATORS WANT SCHOOL SPRING SPORTS

There was a protest at the Morongo Unified School District offices yesterday (February 22). With California having updated its high school sports guidelines late last week, many residents with students attending Morongo Unified School District are ready to see their youth back on the field, track, and court. In a demonstration yesterday, they voiced their discontent with the school board’s decision to not let kids play in the purple tier of California’s reopening plan. Reporter Cassidy Taylor stopped by to meet the demonstrators and files this report…

“We’re asking the board to reconsider the decision that was made in December, that would allow the sports that are able to practice and play in the purple tier, what’s already allowed within the state of California.”

Jennifer Fenenoz was one of the many parents, educators, and students that gathered in front of the Morongo Unified School District office Monday afternoon to ask the district to reconsider their decision to not reopen spring sports

“It means everything to a student athlete, their mental health, their physical health, the social isolation that they are enduring because of the pandemic. They need to be with their peers; for seniors it’s their last chance to play with their teammates, it could make a difference between whether or not they receive a college scholarship.”

As for tonight’s school board agenda, which lacks a discussion on sports, it looks like those frustrated with the decision on spring sports will have to hope that the district schedules a special meeting to reconsider…
