The Morongo Basin Historical Society continues its second Wednesday lecture series with the story of the First Lady of the Desert. Reporter Rebecca Havely has the details…
This lecture entitled, “Minerva Hoyt: Apostle of the Cacti, First Lady of the Desert” will be presented October 12. Retired Joshua Tree National Park ranger and author Joseph Zarki tells the story of how Minerva Hamilton Hoyt nearly single-handedly fought for the establishment of Joshua Tree National Park. It is a tale of courage, perseverance, and determination. It may represent the first time in the history of the National Park Service that a woman led the campaign to establish a large natural park as part of the National Park System. The lecture begins at 5:30 p.m. for a $5 donation at the Hi-Desert Nature Museum, 57116 29 Palms Hwy in Yucca Valley. Come early as seating is limited.
