A group of civic-minded self-starters in Landers have spent the last few months investigating alternative ways to maintain the 163 miles of unpaved roads there. On Saturday, they will present their findings to the Landers Association. Assignment reporter Mike Lipsitz has details…
Landers road conditions recently moved into the spotlight when the county began talk of increasing the annual road maintenance fee there. Instituted in 1984, the voter-approved $20 fee covers a lot less road maintenance in 2016. And while most residents agree that area roads desperately need attention, many are skeptical that the county can handle the job efficiently. It was under these conditions that the self-appointed Landers Road Committee began searching for solutions. The group is expected to present their findings at tomorrow’s regular 3 p.m. meeting of the Landers Association at Belfield Hall on Reche Road just east of Landers Post Office. The Committee plans to canvas those in attendance. If community interest is high, they will recommend formation of a community sponsored Rural Development Cooperative which will aim to seize road maintenance and the annual fee from county control and put operations into the hands of a community board.
