LANDERS MAN LOSES THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS IN SCAM

A Landers man fell victim to a scam in which he gave a con artist tens of thousands of dollars. Beginning October 16, the victim told deputies he got a call from a man who said he was Daniel Foster from the FBI. Foster told the victim he had numerous warrants for several crimes but told the victim he could remove the warrants if the victim paid him money. The victim wired $50,000 to the scam artist, along with $13,000 from his 401K fund and $13,000 in Home Depot Gift cards. The victim told deputies his wife had recently died, and he was not in the right frame of mind to understand that he was being scammed. The Sheriff’s Department reminds residents that no law enforcement agency will contact you by phone and demand that you pay money to make arrest warrants go away. In addition, no reputable business or law enforcement agency will require payment in gift cards or reloadable credit cards. If you have been the victim of such a scam, call the Sheriff’s Department at 760-366-4175.
