LANDERS EARTHQUAKE WAS 26 YEARS AGO TODAY

Twenty-six years ago today, at 4:57 a.m. on a Sunday morning, a low rumble began, a growling sound that grew louder and louder. The ground started to shake, just a little at first, then stronger and stronger. Southern California was shaken awake by a magnitude 7.3 earthquake centered in Landers. The Landers quake shook the Morongo Basin region for what seemed like two to three minutes but was only 32 seconds; it was felt as far away as Arizona and Las Vegas. A 3-year-old boy from Massachusetts who was visiting family in Yucca Valley died when bricks from a chimney fell on him. Hundreds of people were injured. Damage in the Morongo Basin was severe and widespread with buckled roads and collapsed buildings; power was out for days. A grass-roots disaster response was coordinated by Z107.7 for three days until the Red Cross arrived on scene to help.
