Takeover of fire protection services in Desert Heights and Twentynine Palms is the subject of tomorrow’s 9 a.m. hearing by the Local Agency Formation Commission. The public will have an opportunity to comment at the hearing which takes place at San Bernardino City Hall at 300 North D Street in San Bernardino. Given the Fire Department’s bleak financial forecast, indications are that LAFCO will recommend nearly all fire department assets be turned over to county fire on July 1. The meeting’s agenda packet, which can be found at a link in this story at Z1077FM.com details every aspect of the proposal on some 400 pages. Under the plan, local property owners will pay an annual fire fee almost double the current fee, and the main fire station on Adobe Road will be sold to cover part of the unfunded pension liability the department now faces. If LAFCO votes to move forward tomorrow, public stakeholders will have 30 days to protest. A sufficient number of protests would kill the deal.
