The Yucca Valley High School Lady Trojan basketball team continued their strong play with an 88-11 victory over Cathedral City High School Friday (January 21) afternoon in Trojan Gym.
Sophomore Cadence Tarrant was unstoppable in the post putting up a career-high 32 points and grabbing 16 rebounds. Senior Heather Hiday was also flexing with the inside game netting 20 points. Junior Malia Ulery filled the stat sheet with 17 points, 14 rebounds, and 13 steals. Senior Maliah Rodriguez added 10 points and 5 assists. Junior Jaylie Schreiber chipped in 7 points and junior Ashley Lowe got in the scorebook with 2 points.
The win improved the girls’ record to 8-0 in the Desert Valley League standings and 14-3 overall. But that wasn’t the end of the weekend for the Lady Trojans.
Traveling to Glendora High School for the Tartan Shootout on Saturday (January 22), the Lady Trojan varsity basketball team came up short suffering a 50-46 loss to the Downey High School Vikings.
Falling behind by 19 points in the second quarter the Yucca girls rallied to tie the game 43-43 with 2 minutes remaining in the game. The Vikings were able to close out the game with timely free throws to seal the win.
Junior Malia Ulery scored a team-high 21 points despite being hampered by early foul trouble. She was followed by senior Maliah Rodriguez with 14 points, including 3 second-half three-point baskets as the Lady Trojans mounted their comeback. Sophomore Cadence Tarrant posted 9 points and freshman Tayla Monroy added 2 points to round out the scoring.
The loss dropped the team’s overall record to 14-4 with another tough game next on the schedule as the ladies travel to Xavier Prep in Palm Desert on Thursday (January 27) for a non-league contest. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
