The world’s toughest one-day off-road race, Nitto King of the Hammers, is about to get a whole lot more popular. Reporter Rebecca Havely explains why…
Race organizers Hammerking Productions announced Thursday that the purse for the Ultra4 race, which runs on the Friday of race week, has tripled to $100,000 for 2019. The winner will receive $75,000; second place takes home $15,000; and third place received $10,000. An additional payout of $3,750 will go to the driver who has the fastest time up one of the infamous Hammers Trails known as Idle Issues. In 12 years, the race has grown from 12 guys racing for bragging rights, to more than 100 elite off-road racers competing for the crown and now $100K in prize money.
The 2019 running of the King of the Hammers will be from February 1 through February 10 at the Means Dry Lake Bed in Johnson Valley. More than 500 racers and 50,000 spectators are expected at the 2019 races.
