A beetle from Arizona that kills coast live oaks, California black oaks, and canyon live oak trees is believed to have killed oak trees in three areas of San Bernardino County. Managing editor Tami Roleff has more information about the invasive goldspotted oak borer…
The goldspotted oak borer, an invasive beetle native to southeastern Arizona that can kill oaks native to California, has been detected in oak trees that have died in the community of Wrightwood. This is the third infestation found in the county since the initial discovery in Oak Glen last fall. The beetles were also found in the Sugarloaf area of Big Bear this summer. Forest service officials believe the beetle infestation resulted from infested oak firewood being brought into Wrightwood, and they urge the public to buy firewood in the area where they burn it to avoid transporting infested wood to uninfested areas.
