Joshua Tree National Park has announced a temporary closure of the Key’s View overlook effective June 24 through July 2. Managing editor Tami Roleff explains why…
The Key’s View area in Joshua Tree National Park will be closed June 24 through July 2 because of an excessive number of bees at the overlook. Bees need a liter or more of water a day to cool their hive during the hot summer months. Park staff are hopeful that by removing the bee buckets, and with the lack of water from visitors dumping out their water bottles and from vehicle air conditioning condenser units, the bees will be forced to move to a less popular area of the park due to a lack of consistent water source. Park staff will be monitoring the results of the temporary closure.
