In honor of Juneteenth, the federal holiday marking the emancipation of slavery, Women of Color Global 29 will be hosting a celebration this weekend in Twentynine Palms.
Heading into the ‘freedom’ season, Women of Color Global 29 will host their annual Juneteenth Celebration at Knott’s Sky Park tomorrow, June 15. Sponsored by the City of Twentynine Palms and Visit 29 Palms, the event will commemorate the end of slavery in America while celebrating African-American culture.
While the official federal holiday is actually next Wednesday, June 19, the celebration began with the raising of the Juneteenth flag the evening of June 13 in Freedom Plaza.
The Saturday festivities will kick off at 11:45 a.m. with a march, and then continue from noon until 8:00 p.m. The event will feature food vendors, a photo booth, and family-friendly activities. Beginning at 12 noon, live entertainment will include singers, dancers, DJs, and a special spoken word performer from North Carolina.
Hosting the show will be Mariana Wright, who is encouraging all community members to participate. “The goal is to get everyone out in unity, to celebrate each other and have a good time, and that will go until 8 p.m.” said Wright. “We’ll have a DJ there so bring your dancing shoes! And just, a good time of fellowship and to celebrate Juneteenth.”
Knott’s Sky Park is located at 6701-6899 El Sol Avenue in Twentynine Palms.
