We consulted the June edition of Joshua Basin Water District’s Tier Drop newsletter and other sources to help you cultivate the best garden possible for the least amount of water.
Start by replacing high water use plants with native, drought tolerant specimens. June is an excellent time to transplant cactus and palms. Water established landscapes no more than three times per week between 7 p.m. and 10 am. Regularly check your water systems for leaks and repair them. If watering with a hose, make sure it has a shutoff nozzle. Create shallow basins around trees and shrubs and fill with mulch; supplement that mulch through the summer to keep roots cool, deter weeds, and of course, conserve water.
