Joshua Tree National Park management is pleased to announce a new art exhibition by former Artist-in-Residence, Sharon Lee Hart. Filtering the Landscape is inspired by Hart’s fall 2019 artist residency at the park and encompasses two bodies of work.
The Filtering the Landscape series features black and white landscape images merged with transparent filters that express the artist’s emotional response, along with temperature, and color palette as remembered and imagined in the landscape.
The Be in the Wildlife works include unique toned silver gelatin photographs, lumen prints, and pigment prints. These artworks represent a range of perspectives on the park including those of local elementary students, park employees, residents, as well as the artist’s own. Their varied impressions connect back to the practice of photography and its tangled relationship to space, memory, and time. A related small-run publication will be featured that conveys unique perspectives on the park shared by a group of fourth graders.
The exhibition will run from November 19, 2021 until February 18, 2022 at the Black Rock Art Gallery in the Black Rock Nature Center located at 9800 Black Rock Canyon Rd, Yucca Valley, CA 92284. A closing reception with artist’s talk will be held at a future date to be announced.
