JOSHUA TREE MAN OUT OF LUCK WITH IDENTITY THEFT IN NEW YORK CITY

You better hope your Social Security card or identification isn’t stolen and used in New York City. A Joshua Tree man found that out the hard way. According to a Sheriff’s report, the man had moved from New York City a couple years ago, but he found out recently that someone in New York City had opened up a utility account in his name using his Social Security card. He attempted to file a complaint with the NYPD, but was told he had to file a report with his local law enforcement office. He contacted the Morongo Basin Sheriff’s station and a deputy took the report and attempted to forward it—along with leads of the possible suspect—to NYPD. However, at that time the NYPD said they do not take criminal reports for utility theft unless it is over $5,000.
