JOSHUA TREE MAN KILLED BY SUSPECTED DUI DRIVER IN PALMS SPRINGS

austinulshaferA Joshua Tree man was struck and killed by a suspected DUI driver in Palms Springs early Tuesday morning. The California Highway Patrol said Austin Ulshafer, 29, from Cathedral City, was arrested on suspicion of DUI after the two-car crash. CHP investigators said Ulshafer was driving a GMC pickup truck eastbound on Ramon Road at about 2 a.m. Tuesday morning when he struck a Ford Crown Victoria within the intersection of Gene Autry Trail. Both vehicles sustained major damage in the collision. The passenger in the Ford, identified by the Riverside County Coroner’s office as James Brown III, 23, was taken to Desert Regional Medical Center with major injuries. James Brown III was pronounced dead at 11:04 Tuesday morning. Both drivers sustained minor injuries in the crash. Austin Ulshafer was arrested and booked into the Riverside County Jail in Indio on suspicion of driving under the influence and of vehicular manslaughter.
