JOSHUA TREE HOUSING PROJECT ON COUNTY PLANNING COMMISSION AGENDA

A controversial 248-unit housing development in Joshua Tree will go before the County Planning Commission tomorrow. Reporter Mike Lipsitz says the session will be teleconferenced to the Joshua tree County Government building…
The proposed 248-unit gated development in Joshua Tree, known as Alta Mira, is the only agenda item on tomorrow’s 9 a.m. meeting of the County Planning Commission in San Bernardino. The county’s Land Use Services Department is recommending the commission approve the project that would squeeze the single-family homes onto 105 acres adjacent to Friendly Hills Elementary School. Alta Mira has been mired in controversy in the decade since it was first proposed, with community opposition centered around the project’s high density, environmental degradation, and the low-desert aesthetic a gated community would foster. Tomorrow’s meeting will be broadcast live to the first floor Teleconferencing Center in the County Government Building on the highway at Whitefeather Road in Joshua Tree. The Planning Commission will hear public comments on the project via a live video link from the Teleconferencing Center; this arrangement is a first for the Planning Commission.
