An attempt to do the right thing ended up bringing the fire department out in Joshua Tree Sunday evening. Residents near Quail Springs Road and Rincon Roads were burning a tattered flag, trying to follow proper flag etiquette in disposing of an unserviceable flag, about 9:45 p.m. However, the residents neglected to obtain a burn permit from the county prior to burning the flag. The Joshua Tree fire department responded and put out the illegal burn. County fire permits are free; call your local fire department for more information about obtaining a burn permit.
